Dental caries and its complications remain one of the most pressing issues in dentistry today. Failure to diagnose and treat this condition in a timely manner can lead to adverse health consequences for patients, particularly those of young, working age.
The most common metric used to assess the intensity of dental caries is the DMFT index (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth). However, while this index accounts for both the consequences of untreated decay and the outcomes of prior treatment, it does not describe the depth of the carious lesion within the hard dental tissues. This is particularly significant when identifying demineralization at an early stage. In contrast, the ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) index allows for the assessment of carious lesion activity based on both clinical and histological data. Beyond providing a detailed clinical picture, this index enables the monitoring of the progression of the carious process and facilitates the planning of appropriate treatment. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of caries intensity, it is necessary to conduct a detailed assessment utilizing both the DMFT and ICDAS criteria.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the activity of the carious process in individuals of various ages using the DMFT and ICDAS indices.
Materials and Methods. The study involved 38 individuals diagnosed with caries of the hard dental tissues. All participants were divided into groups based on age: Group I consisted of 13 individuals aged 18–25; Group II, 14 individuals aged 26–35; and Group III, 11 individuals aged 36–45. The subjects reported no history of somatic or infectious diseases.
Caries intensity was determined using the DMFT index, while the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) was used to evaluate the activity of carious lesions. Results: An analysis of the DMFT index scores reveals a sharp increase in the index among patients of prime working age compared to younger individuals.
An examination of the extent of caries progression into the enamel and dentin—assessed via the ICDAS system—shows that among patients in the 18–25 age group, 71.4% presented with enamel caries, while 28.6% had lesions involving the dentin. In the 26–35 age group, 41.0% of the affected teeth fell under codes 1–3, and 59.0% fell under codes 4–6. Among patients in the oldest age group, 27.9% of the carious teeth were classified under codes 1–3, while 72.1% were classified under codes 4–6. The results indicate an increase in the depth of hard dental tissue lesions with advancing patient age, as well as an increase in the average number of affected teeth with dentin destruction per individual examined. Conclusions. An analysis of our research findings reveals that as the age of the examined patients increases, the proportion of restored (filled) teeth decreases, while the proportion of extracted teeth rises. Furthermore, the highest percentage of teeth affected by caries was observed in the 26–35 age group.
As patient age increases, both the average number of affected teeth and the number of carious teeth with dentin destruction per individual examined also increase.
